FIRE STATION SITE STUDY
Fire Chief Mel Enslow reported that while preparing the study to identify the
best locations for fire stations, the following factors were taken into account:
achieve a four minute response time to emergency calls 90 percent of the time at
maximum build-out of the City; locate fire stations in an area that will "co-exist"
with their neighbors in harmony; provide for emergency apparatus to safely
enter into the flow of traffic; equally divide emergency resources on both sides
of the Interstate 10 Freeway; phase in new locations to coincide with growth
patterns of the City; and provide for future growth and equipment needs of the
fire department in designs of the building. With these thoughts in mind, staff
recommended construction of a headquarters' fire station at the Brookside
Avenue site, the replacement of Station No. 1 (Redlands Boulevard and Citrus
Avenue) with a fire station at Fifth Avenue and Dearborn Street, and
construction of a fire station at Nevada Street and Lugonia Avenue when
development occurs in the area. It was further recommended the site on Cypress
Avenue at the I-10 Freeway be eliminated from future discussions as it does not
meet minimum requirements for housing a ladder truck. City Manager
Luebbers said a current appraisal was needed for the Cypress Avenue property
and a financial plan would be prepared for the City Council's consideration.
