This special meeting of the Council was called for the purpose of con-
sidering extending an invitation to the National Little League to estab-
lish their Western Regional Headquarters in Redlands.
City Manager Merritt explained that a decision on the proposed lease of
ten acres of City property adjacent to the Community Baseball Field by
the National Little League for location of their Western Regional Head-
quarters is necessary at this time. Any proposal must reach the National
Headquarters prior to October 21, 1968, the date on which announcement of
their final decision will be made.
Mr. Melvyn R. Poer, executive director of the Regional Economic Develop-
ment Council, reviewed the proposal and pointed out possible benefits
accruing to the City from joint use of the Little League facilities.
Mr. Chris Barnes, chairman of Baseball for Boys, summarized that program,
its future plans and expectations, requirements and accomplishments, in-
cluding an explanation of a T-Ball activity planned to interest eight-
year-olds, and assured Council that every boy who desired to play base-
ball would continue to have the opportunity to do so. He stated unequiv-
ocally that there is no conflict in the two projects, either in activity,
participation, or : in timing., as Baseball for Boys has always finished
using the facilities by July 31 of each year. He urged Council to extend
the invitation.
Councilman Martinez pointed out that as Baseball for Boys would continue
to grow, it could profit by joint use of facilities.
Also speaking in favor of the proposal were: Jim Glaze, president, and
Cale Whipple, manager of the Chamber •of Commerce, and James Eselin of the
YMCA, who stated that be could see no conflict.
Following lengthy consideration, on motion of Councilman Cummings,
seconded by Councilman Martinez, the Council unanimously voted to extend
a hearty invitation, and offer of the use of the ten acres of land under
consideration at $1.00 per year for 25 years, to the National Little
League as a site for their Western Regional Headquarters.
No further business being scheduled for this time, on motion, the Council
adjourned at 7: 30 P.M.
Next regular meeting, October 15, 1968.
