NEW BUSINESS
Proposed California Heart and Surgical Hospital - Mayor Peppler explained the
City Council of the City of Loma Linda will meet on August 23, 2005, to
discuss an application for the proposed California Heart and Surgical Hospital.
She called this special meeting to order for the members of our City Council to
discuss the potential impact this might have on the citizens of Redlands. At this
time, public comments were invited regarding this matter. Stan Weisser,
member of the Redlands Community Hospital Board of Directors, asked the
City Council to consider preparing a letter to the Loma Linda City Council
expressing concerns about this proposed facility. Jim Holmes, President and
CEO of Redlands Community Hospital, also urged the submission of a letter to
the Loma Linda City Council. Representing the California Heart and Surgical
Hospital project, Bill Arsenault spoke at length in support of this facility. Oscar
Sepp opposed the proposal and Scott Siegel questioned the timing of this
discussion. Mayor Peppler directed several questions to Mr. Homes.
Councilmember Harrison felt it was important the Redlands City Council weigh
in on this as it is a regional issue, but indicated he did not have enough
information at this time and suggested asking the City of Loma Linda to look
into the proposal further. Councilmember Gilbreath explained why she did not
have a conflict and supported Councilmember Harrison's suggestion.
Councilmember George submitted a letter which was read by City Clerk Poyzer
which urged our City Council to not take action either for or against the
proposal and leave the matter in the hands of the Loma Linda City Council.
Following discussion, Councilmember Peppler moved to prepare a letter to the
Loma Linda City Council listing out the concerns of the City of Redlands with
regards to this project and how it will affect Redlands Community Hospital and
our community, and asking that our issues be fully addressed prior to a final
decision being made. Motion seconded by Councilmember Harrison and
carried by AYE votes of all present.
