SELF-SERVICE LAUNDRIES
Seco 2381. ATTENDANT REQUIRED. It is unlawful for any person, firm,
association, joint adventure or corporation to operate any self-service laundry
or washing machine or drying machine open to the public unless there is present
at all times, a responsible person having the ability and training to effectively
operate and care for said business, washing machine or drying machine. (1176)
Sec. 2381.1 BUSINESS LICENSE REQUIRED. The assessment and payment of the
Business License Tax for self-service laundries operated under this article shall.
be governed by the provisions of Chapter 21 and 22, applicable to laundries. (1176;
Sec. 2382. NON-ATTENDED. A self-service laundry may be operated without
the continuous presence of a responsible person only by complying with the
following sub-sections-. (1176)
Sec. 2382.1 VISIBILITY OF INTERIOR. That the self-service laundry be on
the ground floor of the building facing on a public street or highway or parking
area available for public use, with windows of clear glass extending the entire
width of the building on the facing side,, except at point of joist or doorway
and that the same be kept free and clear of all obstacles and equipment so as to
provide a view of the entire storeroom from the street or pavement. (1176)
Sec. 2382.2 EQUIPTENT. That suitable metal containers be placed in the
storeroom for the placing of rubbish or trash by customers or owner. That all
rooms or passages into the self-service laundry, except toilet and washroom, be
kept locked at all times. That self-opening doors capable of opening themselves
when manually released and remaining open under normal operating conditions be
used on dryers. That the opening of the dryer be a minimum of three unobstructed
feet from the floor, platform, or ledge, constituting the normal position for the
operation of the dryer. That all equipment used in any self-service laundry,
operating without an attendant, must be approved by the Underwriters Laboratory,
Inc. or a laboratory of equal experience and standing as determined by the
Building and Safety Superintendent. (1176)
Sec. 2382.3 LIGHTING AND TELEPHONES. That the entire storeroom be illumi-
nated at all times by artificial lighting of a minimum of 15 foot candlepower
at a height above the floor level of three feet; that a telephone available to
the public shall be maintained in the storeroom in a location visible and
accessible from any point in the storeroom. (1176)
Sec. 2382.4 INSURANCE. That the owner of any such self-service laundry,
grating without an attendant, shall secure and and file with the City Clerk
cif the City of Redlands a liability insurance policy in the minimum sum of
$25,000.00 for one person and $100,000.00 for two or more persons, insuring
such owner against all damage resulting from injuries to any person or persons
using or visiting such self-service laundry and caused by negligent operation
of any equipment in such place of business and against any and all damage caused
by any negligence of the owners of such place of business. The policy must be
approved by said City. (1176)
