SPEC IF ICAT IONS
For the 0,onstruction of Concrete Curbs
and gutters in the City of Redlands
California, under Resolution of intention

0 URBS: The thickness of the curb shall be six iihches (61t ) at the
base and taper from six inches at the base of the gutter to five (519
inches at the top of the curb, thus giving a batter of one inch (111)
on the face of the ourb, The 'back of the curb shall be perpendicular.
The curb and gutter shall conform to the oross-eeotion shimm.
The concrete for the curb shall be composed of one (1) part
Portland cement to three (3) parts sand and five (5) parts crushed
rook or gravel.
The front surface arid top of the curb shall be plastered
with a coat of cement composed of one (1) part sand to one (1) part
Portland cement.
The foundation for the curb shall be well settled and pre-
pared In the same manner as the foundation for the gutter*
The curb shall be marked off with an expansion joint in
iine *,*viti'l each expansion joint in the gutter.
1. 2oundation. The foundation for the full width of the
gutter as shown by the cross-section, shall be brought to the proper
sub-grade, five inches (51t ) below the finish grade, and all soft or
spongy material shall be removed and replaced with gravel or earth
of a quality that will paok when moistened. This material shall be
moistened and the whole foundation tamped or rolled until it is solid,,%
The material to be a-applied, in case of a fill, shall be good earth
and shall be built up iu layers not exoesding one foot (11 ) in thick-
ness, each layer being well paoked by rolling or tamping. Each layer
of the fill shall be flooded with water to thoroly settle it.
2. Shape: The thickness of gutter shall be five inches
(5") . The width of gutter shall be two feet (21 ) . The slope of the
gutter shall be from the outside to the curb line at a rate of one &at

5. Matarials and Construction: Cement gutters shall be oon.-
structed, of aonorete as follows:
One (1) part of Portland Cement (1 sack Portland
oement equals one (1) cubic foot)
Three parts (5) (by measure) of sand
Five (5) parts crushed rook or gravel.
The cement shall be an approved brand of Portland oement
and pass the test of the American Society of Civil Engineers for Port-
land oement. The sand shall he clean and sharp and shall be free from
loam and vegetable matter.
The material shall be thoroly mixed in an approved concrete
mixer. Upon a foundation prepared as hereinbefore specified shall be
spread as layer of concrete which shall be thoroly tamped and floated
to a smooth surface. The finish coat shall be marked off in blocks
which shall not be *ore than three feet (51 ) in length.
The gutter to be laid in one Bourse or layer with the excep-
tion. that sufficient cement and sand of a mixture of equal parts shall
be added to the surface to take up the surplus water and allow the sur-
face to be finished in a smooth manner,
4. All sand, rock and gravel shall be of good quality and
free from dirt or other foreign material.
X11 work shall, in every respect, be executed in as thoro
and workmanlike manner. The contractor shall be required to preserve
all stakes set for the line, levels or measurements of the work in their
proper places until authorized to remove them by the Oity Engineer and
any expense incurred in replacing the said stakes,, which the contractor
or his subordinates may have Ailsto preserve shall be borne by the
contractor. Any overseer, superintendent, laborer or other person em-
played on the work by the aontr4ator who shall perform his work in a maj'k-
ner contrary to these specifications shall be discharged immediately and
s person or persons, shall not again be employed on the work.
No work which may be defective in its construction or de-
ficient in any, of the requirements of these specifications will be don-
sidered as accepted in consequence of the failure of any officer or the
city inspector connected with the work to point out said defeats or as-

ficienoies during construction, and the contractor shall be required
to correct any imperfect work, whenever discovered, before the final
acceptance of the work*
The contractor shall furniat all material necessary to per—
form said work and construct the same in a000rdaaiQe with plans and
specifications.

SPEC IFIOAT IONS.
For the Construction of Stone Curbs
and 0onorete Gutters in the City Of
Redlands 'under Resolution of Intention No

The foundation for the full width of the gutter, as shown
by the okoas-section, shall be brought to the proper sub-grade, five
(5) j4pheo below the finish gr4de, and all soft or spongy material
shall be removed, and replaced with gravel or earth of a qualitt'i, that
will pack when moistened. This material shall be moistened and the
whole foundation tamped or rolled until it is solid. The material to
be supplied, in case of a fill, shall be good earth and shall be built
up In layers not exceeding one (1) foot in thickness, eael- layer being
well packed by rolling or tamping. Bach layer of the fill shall be
"Ila#ded with water to thorolY settle it.
The thickness of gutter shall be as specified herein. The
width of gutter shall be two and one-half feet (2j' ) . The slope of
the gutter shall be from the outside to the curb line at a rate of
one (1) inch for every foot in width.
&terials and ulonstruution:
one (1) part (by measure ) of Portland Cement. A stan-
dard sack of cement as put up by the manufac-
ti.irer shall be one (1) cubic foot*
Two (2) parts by measure of sand.
Five (5) parts by measure. of broken stone or gravel.
The cement shall be an approved brand of Portland Cement and
pass the test of the American Society of Civil Engineers for Portland
Cement. The sand shall be clean and sharp, and shall be free from loan,
vegetable matter, silt and dirt. The gravel or broken stone shall be of
hard durable material ranging in size from that which will pass thru a
two and one-half inch (2j") careen and be held- on a one-qaarter Inch
screen,
The materials shall be thoroly mixed in a batch concrete
mixer which shall revolve for at least one minute with each 'batch. The
batch shall be of such consistency that when taken from the machine
t1kere shall be no surplus water. No concrete shall be used that shows
evidence of having set from standing too long and no remixing of son-
trete will be allowed.
Upon a foundation prepared as hereinbefore specified shall be
spread a layer of concrete which shall be thoroly tamped until the coarse
material is tamped down sufficient to allow a smooth, even, float finish
on the surface,
The surface shall be marked with an ordinary sidewalk expan-
sion joint mar or at intervals of three (1) feet, perpendicular to the
curb line.
There concrete is laid over an old cobblestone gutter, such
gutter must be washed until all mud and dirt is removed from the exposed
face of all cobblestones to be covered with the concrete,

The thickness of the curb shall be four inches (40 . it the
corners of the streets the Qurb shall be laid in a curve having a radius
Of fear feet (41 ). The curb shall be of a sound white granite rook from
the Santa Ann Wash or equally good material from elawhere, regular on
its We, squared on top and on each end so as to make a perpendicular
closed joint. Each aurbOne mast be of full depth extending from the
top line of the curb to the bottom of the gutter and be oarefolly set to
the line and grade given by the My Engineer with a batter of one inch
(I") to ten inches (10" ) on its face. The curbstone joints shall be
pointed up on the face, the top shall be caped.. The top finish and the
space between the curbstones shall be filled with a mortar composed of
one (1) part cement to two (2) parts of clean sharp saud,
The grade and line of curb, when finished, shall be true and
even.
The foundation for the curb ohall be well settled and preparK
in the same manner as the foundation for the gutters.
All work shall, in every respect , be executed in a thorn and
workmanlike manner, The contractor shall be required to preserve all

proper places until authorized to remove them by the Oity Engineer and

or his employees may have failed to preserve, shall be borne by the can-
