SUBJECT : Designation of Sunset Drive as a Scenic Drive
Attached is a proposed resolution which would designate a portion
of Sunset Drive as a scenic drive and establish guidelines for
future development along that street .
This procedure was utilized in the designation of Cajon Street and
a portion of Mariposa Drive as scenic streets . The specific plan
procedure was utilized for the designation of portions of Brookside
Avenue, Olive Avenue , Center Street and Highland Avenue as scenic
highways . Either procedure would accomplish the objective of the
Historic and Scenic Preservation Commission' s request .
I have reservations concerning inclusion of the wordage "present
configuration, widths and vistas" in the resolution . There are
abrupt turns along Sunset Drive that the city might wish to realign
for safety reasons . Also, portions of Sunset Drive have been par-
tially widened and it would be logical to continue such widening .
One example is the section between Ridge Street and Kincaid Street .
Finally, the word "vistas" is somewhat nebulous and could result in
potentially controversial interpretations that the city should not
be involved in.
I believe the primary objective of the Commission is to preserve the
cut stone curbs and rock walls along Sunset Drive .
