A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AUTHORIZING THE
SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION TO THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION FOR A GRANT FOR A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE REDLANDS
HERITAGE LINEAR PARK AND TRAIL IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $200,000
WHEREAS, the California Department of Transportation ("DOT") has established grants
for six different planning programs in order to implement capital improvement projects that reduce
congestion and improve mobility across California; and
WHEREAS, the proposed Redlands Heritage Linear Park and Trail, between Santa Ana
River Trail at California Street and Wabash Avenue, has the potential to become a valuable
community trail facility that would connect five existing parks and one future park(four of which are
immediately adjacent to the route) provide local recreation opportunities; and
WHEREAS, this natural corridor will pass through the heart of downtown,bringing welcome
green space and a safe, non-motorized travel route to the center of the city and will provide access
to the commercial and entertainment venues located in downtown as well as the future Metrolink
station under consideration by San Bernardino Associated Governments and Metrolink; and
WHEREAS, the proposed trail will eventually form a non-motorized loop passing through
residential neighborhoods and downtown that connects with the Santa Ana River Regional Trail at
each of its ends; and
WHEREAS, the proposed linear park and trail system is included in the City of Redlands'
General Plan and is supported by major employers in the area including Environmental Systems
Research Institute(ESRI) and the University of Redlands.
WHEREAS, if the grant is awarded, the City will be required to provide matching funds
equaling 10% of the total grant amount;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redlands
authorizes the submission of an application to the California Department of Transportation for a
grant to prepare a feasibility study of a linear park and trail from California Street to Wabash
Avenue in the City of Redlands, in an amount not to exceed $200,000.
