HomeMy WebLinkAbout8591RESOLUTION NO. 8591 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS COMMEMORATIVELY RENAMING THE REDLANDS COMMUNITY SENIOR CENTER THE "EDDIE AND GLORIA FLORES SENIOR CENTER." WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission is requesting the commemorative naming of the Redlands Community Senior Center as the "Eddie and Gloria Flores Senior Center" in honor of Eddie and Gloria Flores who have made significant contributions to the Redlands community as described in Exhibit "A"; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Redlands adopted Resolution No. 7711 on February 21, 2017; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Resolution No. 7711, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee has the appropriate jurisdiction to review park naming recommendations; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the requirement of Resolution No. 7711, Criteria forNaming Parks, Buildings and other Public Facilities, City parks, buildings or other public facilities may be named for a person or entity who has made a significant contribution to the Redlands community, provided such person shall be deceased for at least (3) years prior to designating his or her name for a park, building or other public facility, unless waived by the City Council. NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. City Council hereby waives the requirement of Resolution No. 7711 that Eddie Flores and Gloria Fores shall be deceased for at least three (3) years prior to designating their names to a facility. Section 2. As Field Marshal for the Brown Beret Organization from 1964-1975, he ensured adherence to national protocols while organizing community activities like holiday parties and fundraisers at no cost. He taught martial arts and provided free educational tutoring through the University of Action and El Centro De La Gente. As a counselor and site director at the Redlands - Yucaipa Guidance Clinic Association from 1971-1991, he supported at -risk youth and collaborated with law enforcement to enhance community safety. Eddie has also been instrumental in Navidad En El Barrio since 1964 and the Northside Impact Committee since 1993, focusing on community recognition and scholarships. His foster care work through Childhelp USA earned him the "For the Love of a Child" Award in 2012. Additionally, Eddie has held positions on boards including the YMCA of Redlands and Boys and Girls Club of Redlands East Valley, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to fostering positive change and supporting the community. Gloria Flores has dedicated decades to community service in Redlands, impacting lives across various sectors. Beginning in 1962, she was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church Altar Society, engaging in fundraising and choir events. As a co-founder and secretary of El Centro De La Gente from 1973-1991, she enhanced educational and cultural opportunities for underprivileged youth, including forming a Ballet Folklorico and securing resources for its success. Her significant contributions continued at the Redlands -Yucaipa Guidance Clinic Association and SHU-Business & Education Institute, where she directed multiple programs, improving educational outcomes for hundreds and aiding countless others in obtaining legal U.S. status. Gloria's coordination role in Navidad En El Barrio since 1976 has ensured the distribution of annual food baskets and gifts to those in need. Additionally, her leadership in the Northside Impact Committee since 1991 as co- founder and treasurer has led to the distribution of numerous scholarships and recognition awards, further demonstrating her commitment to community betterment.
