HomeMy WebLinkAbout8593RESOLUTION NO. 8593 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS COMMEMORATIVELY RENAMING THE COMMUNITY PARK "MARTINEZ PARK." WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission is requesting the commemorative renaming of Community Park as "Martinez Park" in honor of Norman N. Martinez and Oddie J. Martinez who have made significant contributions to the Redlands community as described in Exhibit "A"; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Redlands adopted Resolution No. 7711 on February 21, 2017; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Resolution No. 7711, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee has the appropriate jurisdiction to review park naming recommendations; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the requirement of Resolution No. 7711, Criteria forNaming Parks, Buildings and other Public Facilities, City parks, buildings or other public facilities may be named for a person or entity who has made a significant contribution to the Redlands community, provided such person shall be deceased for at least (3) years prior to designating his or her name for a park, building or other public facility, unless waived by the City Council. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Community Park, located on Church St. between San Bernardino Ave. and E Pennsylvania Ave., will be known as "Martinez Park." Norman N. Martinez: Norman N. Martinez (1925-1998) was a lifelong resident of Redlands, a World War II veteran, and a devoted community leader. He was the first Latin American to serve on the Redlands City Council from 1958 to 1970, including a term as Vice Mayor. Norman's deep involvement in the community was evident through his roles as president and co-founder of the Redlands Boys Club, president of both the Kiwanis Club and Redlands Pony League Baseball, and as a board member of several local service organizations. His post -military life was also marked by significant contributions as a charter member and commander of the American Legion Post 650, and officer in the 40 & 8 Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Norman's extensive service and leadership across civic, veterans', and community sectors left a lasting impact on Redlands, embodying a legacy of dedication and service. 2. Oddie J. Martinez: Oddie J. Martinez (1928-1995) was a dedicated lifelong resident of Redlands, deeply rooted in both the community and its citrus industry from a young age. A veteran of the U.S. Navy stationed on Iwo Jima in the Aviation and Intelligence Service post -WWII (1945- 1949), he also became the first commander of the American Legion Post 650, actively engaging in veterans' affairs. Oddie was a prominent educator for over 30 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and district coordinator, impacting numerous educational programs including foreign languages and Title I programs. He earned his master's degree in administration from the University of Redlands, with further studies at Claremont Graduate School and the University of Oregon. Oddie's political contributions were significant; he was the second Latin American and the first from the north side to serve as Mayor of Redlands (1978-1980) after his tenure on the city council from 1978 to 1985.
