HomeMy WebLinkAbout8508RESOLUTION NO. 8508 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS ESTABLISHING THE PROCESS FOR THE SELECTION OF THE MAYOR AND MAYOR PRO TEMPORE AND THEIR RESPECTIVE TERMS OF OFFICE AND REPEALING RESOLUTION NO. 8414 WHEREAS, on December 20, 2022, the City Council discussed potential changes to the selection process by which the council selects the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore; and WHEREAS on January 17, 2023, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 2953 amending Chapter 2.02 of the Redlands Municipal Code and Resolution 8414 amending the procedure for selecting the Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tempore; and WHEREAS, Resolution No. 8414 amended the process by which the City Council selects the next Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore and introduced a seniority -based rotation for these positions; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Council to repeal Resolution No. 8414 and to adopt Resolution No. 8508 to restore the language and the process that existed in former Chapter 2.02 describing the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore Selection Process to that which existed previously; and WHEREAS, the adoption of Resolution No. 8508 restores the process for selecting the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore to a nomination selection process. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Pursuant to Government Code Section 36801, the City Council shall meet after each general municipal election and choose one of its members as Mayor, and one of its members as Mayor Pro Tempore by way of council member nomination. The terms of office of the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore shall be for (2) years, except as provided in Section 2, and Section 3. Section 2. In the event of the terms of the Council member are shortened or extended, as a result of any change in the election date for City Council members, the terms of the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore shall be correspondingly shortened or, in the case of an extension of the Council members' terms, the City Council shall meet and select one of its members to serve as Mayor and one of its members as Mayor Pro Tempore for the period of time the Council members' terms are extended until the next municipal election. Section 3. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore shall hold office, at the pleasure of the City Council, from the date of their selection and until their successors are chosen. 1 C:\Users\arothschild\Desktop\8508 Selection of Mayor Mayor Pro Temv1docx jm Section 4. The City Council hereby repeals Resolution No. 8414 Section 5. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
