HomeMy WebLinkAbout8732RESOLUTION NO. 8732 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS ESTABLISHING THE CITY OF REDLANDS FOOD SECURITY AND CHILD NUTRITION SUPPORT INITIATIVE WHEREAS, the City of Redlands recognizes that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human need and essential for the health, learning, and well-being of children and families; and WHEREAS, the recent federal freeze on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) adjustments and reduced CalFresh benefits have increased food insecurity in local households, particularly among children; and WHEREAS, local schools, food banks, and nonprofit partners report rising demand for emergency food assistance and school meal programs across the Inland Empire; and WHEREAS, the City of Redlands has the opportunity to work collaboratively with local agencies, faith -based organizations, and community partners to expand meal access, support local food systems, and promote healthy nutrition for all residents; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Food Security Task Force: The City Manager shall direct City staff to convene a Food Security Task Force composed of representatives from the City, Redlands Unified School District, University of Redlands, faith -based organizations, and local nonprofits to coordinate citywide efforts and identify barriers to food access. Section 2. City Sites for Food Access: City staff shall identify City -owned facilities (such as community centers, parks, or parking lots) that could host mobile food pantries, community meals, or gardens in partnership with local food providers. Section 3. Youth Nutrition Programs: The City shall work with Redlands Unified School District and Parks & Recreation to expand summer meal sites and after -school snack programs, prioritizing areas with high child food insecurity. Section 4. Community Mini -Grants: Subject to budget approval, the City shall explore creating mini -grants to support nonprofit and community -led efforts addressing food insecurity and children's nutrition. Section 5. Advocacy and Funding: The City Council shall urge state and federal leaders to restore and increase SNAP and CalFresh support, and shall pursue available grants from the USDA, CalFresh Healthy Living, or the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Section 6.
