HomeMy WebLinkAbout6821_CCv0001.pdf RESOLUTION NO. 6821 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS SUPPORTING STATE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ESTABLISH A FEE FOR SINGLE-USE BAGS, WHEREAS, approximately 14 billion plastic grocery and merchandise bags are used annually in California and only a small fraction of this nUniber is recycled; and WHEREAS, plastic bags pose a problem for recyclers. They are responsible for jamming machinery and greatly add to the cost of manual labor for sorting and processing recyclables. They interfere with the sorting of beverage containers and various grades of paper on the sorting lines of the States materials recovery facilities; and WHEREAS, plastic bags are associated with an adverse impact on numerous species. Plastic bags are especially dangerous to various marine species. Made from natural gas or oil, plastic bags consume the energy equivalent of thousands of barrels of oil to meet the demand of California's consumers; and WHEREAS, several local communities have debated whether to pass similar bans, but a comprehensive, state-wide solution is needed. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. City staff is authorized to support State legislation that would establish a fee for single-use bags.
