HomeMy WebLinkAbout6335_CCv0001.pdf RESOLUTION NO. 6335 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF CALIFORNIA'S FIRST CULTURES: A CELEBRATION AT CRAFTON HILLS PROMOTING NOVEMBER AS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH WHEREAS, The East San Bernardino Valley has been home to native people for countless generations; and WHEREAS, the native people of Yucaipa and Redlands have a distinct culture and unique traditions that binds them to the Earth and all its living plants and creatures; and WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month has been celebrated across the nation for many years, and; WHEREAS, November, 2004, marks the first year that the California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Want) will be held in recognition of the first people of Yucaipa and Redlands by designating a day to educate our school children about local Indian history; and WHEREAS,nearly 200 students, teachers and members of the community have participated in this unique celebration of culture and history at Crafton Hills College; and WHEREAS, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has had the foresight and vision to establish a partnership with local educators and school officials to provide factual information and materials about the region's Native Americans for area school children to use in the classroom; and WHEREAS, the San Manuel Tribal Unity and Cultural Awareness Program, Crafton Hills College, the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center, Santos Manuel Student Union at Cal State San Bernardino and the Yucaipa Valley Historical Society have worked together to enrich students, educators, and members of the community alike through cultural demonstrations, lectures, and educational resources; and WHEREAS, California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Waat) is held concurrently with Native American Heritage Month held nationwide, celebrated every November, and will assist educators with new educational resources about the rich and varied lives of the region's first people; and WHEREAS, the California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Waat) Committee is committed to contributing to the educational curricula provided by the State of California; and WHEREAS, the California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Waat) Committee believes in providing new and improved educational resources to the students and educators of Yucaipa and Redlands about California Native Americans; and WHEREAS, the California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Want) is the vision of its committee members to identify new areas of study and discourse to develop and augment California Indian history; and WHEREAS, educational leaders throughout California are encouraged to involve themselves and their schools in a statewide focus on improving the education provided to our children about the indigenous tribes of the East San Bemardino Valley; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redlands hereby recognizes California's First Cultures: A Celebration at Crafton Hills (Waat) for its ongoing commitment to bring local indigenous history to the classrooms of California, and encourages all educators to commemorate this occasion with appropriate instructional activities; ADOPTED, SIGNED AND APPROVED this 19th day of October, 2004.
