HomeMy WebLinkAbout2448_CCv0001.pdf RESOLUTION NO . 2448 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS SUPPORTING THE PASSAGE OF SENATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 17 ESTABLISHING A TELEPHONE COMPANY TAX IN LIEU OF FRANCHISE WHEREAS , the telephone companies paid a franchise fee for many years , as all other utilities , and this local revenue source has been lost , and not replaced, nor have consumers benefited by a proportionate reduction in rates , and WHEREAS , all other utilities pay a franchise fee for the special privilege of using public streets and sidewalks for poles , wires , conduits and vaults , and simple equity demands that telephone companies pay no more or no less than other utilities for such privilege , WHEREAS, said constitutional amendment 17 establishes tax in lieu of local business license taxes , and it is impossible for cities and counties to dictate a measure should be in lieu of state taxes , a violation of the right of the State Legislature to levy any type of tax now or in the future .. NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS ; Section 1. The City Council, for and on behalf of the people of the City of Redlands , supports the passage of Senate Constitutional Amendment 17 . Section 2 . That certified copies of this resolution be sent to Governor Edmund. Ga Brown, Lt . Governor Glenn M. Anderson, President Pro Tempore of the Senate Hugh M. Burns ; Assembly Speaker Jesse M. Unruh; Senator Eugene Nesbit ; Assemblyman Stuart Hinckley and Richard Carpenter, League of California Cities .
