HomeMy WebLinkAbout2717_CCv0001.pdf RESOLUTION NO. 2717 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS URGING LEGISLATORS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER CLOSING THE UNITED STATES-MEXICAN BORDER TO AMERICAN MINORS UNLESS ACCOM- PANIED BY A PARENT OR OTHER RESPONSIBLE ADULT WHEREAS , The distribution and use of dangerous drugs, marijuana and narcotics by American minors has become an extremely serious problem in the State of California, and in the City of Redlands; and WHEREAS , State and Federal law enforcement agencies directly in- volved with this problem have advised the City Council of the City of Redlands that quantities of said dangerous drugs, marijuana and narcotics are brought into the State by American minors who enter Mexico by crossing the California-Mexican border, obtain such prod- ucts in Mexico, and return with them to the State of California; and WHEREAS , the City of Redlands within the past few months has experienced an outbreak in the distribution and use of dangerous drugs and marijuana by minors, particularly students attending local Junior and Senior High Schools, with ample evidence that such products were brought to this City from Mexico by American minors ; and WHEREAS , The General Assembly of the League of California Cities, assembled at its 70th Annual Conference in Los Angeles on October 16, 1968, passed a resolution urging the United States Congress to con- duct hearings in Southern California to consider the closing of the California-Mexican border to minors, unless said minors were accom- panied by a parent or other responsible adult; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Redlands, in conjunction with the League of California Cities and other California cities, that this Council urges members of the United States Congress , State of California Legislators and Federal and State governmental officials to seriously consider closing the United States-Mexican border to American minors seeking entry to Mexico, unless said minors are accompanied by a parent or other res- ponsible adult; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to send copies of this resolution to Senator George Murphy; Senator Alan Cranston; Congressman Jerry Pettis ; Senator Gordon Cologne; Governor Ronald Reagan; and Attorney General Thomas C .
